He was one of eleven children, seven brothers and three sisters who have preceded him in death. In his early years, he worked the farm, the `green` house on Deer Creek, north of Otis, with his brothers. The Phelps family was so large that they had their own Boy Scout Troop. John`s older brother Gayton Phelps served as Scout Master. As a Boy Scout, John and his brothers hiked the forests of North Lincoln County and Cascade Head. John attended Taft High School in Lincoln City, Oregon. Accompanied by his mother Pearl, John enlisted in the Navy one day before his 1. He served in the invasion of France during World War ll, aboard a Tank Landing Ship (LST), USS LST 6. USS LST 5. 61. During his tour his travels included France, Italy, Greece and Oran. In January 1. John married Joanna Jean Larson, whom he had met at Taft High School. He and his wife settled in Tualatin and began their family. They moved from Tualatin to Mc. Minnville and after a number of years they settled in Dallas, Oregon. He was known as `Farmer John` to those in the logging business and he owned and operated his own log truck. John was well- known to be quick with a smile and a story to tell. It has often been said that he doesn`t know a stranger. John relished time with family, including time he spent with his siblings and their families at the annual Phelps Family Reunion. The last few weeks of his life he was comforted by his family, especially by his daughter. John is survived by his wife of 6. Joanna; his sons, Steven Phelps, Ronald Phelps; daughter, Tamara Inman; grandsons, Zachary Phelps, Joshua Phelps; granddaughter, Johanna Perales; and great grandson, Asher Phelps. Her first Oregon job was with Metropolitan Life. On July 1. 6, 1. 95. Dolores married Bruce O. Beals and together they had three children: Jeffery Bruce, Deborah Caroline and Connie Jean. She worked at Kennedy Elementary School for 2. She was an instructional assistant helping children learn to read and do math. She was also a recess teacher. The kids at school liked to refer to her as Mrs. Dolores enjoyed sewing, baking and traveling. She also loved to dance and go camping. She especially loved being with her family and great- grandbabies. She will be remembered for her kindness, smile, laugh and big heart. She is survived by her husband Bruce; children Jeff, Debbee Herron and Connie Wakkure; five grandchildren; nine great- grandchildren; and sister Jean Raker- Marshall. She lived in various northern California communities before her move to Salem in the 9. Never shy, nor reserved, she could be so silly and fun. As a child, she danced at the 1. World`s Fair at SF Treasure Island. She loved people, and people loved her. She taught two of her children how to fake burp. An achievement she was quite proud of. She sang off- key and loud, and taught her children many silly songs. For many years she was involved in community and neighborhood activities. Committal at City View Cemetery. She worked for the Oregon Department of Human Services in a variety of positions until her retirement in 2. Sue lived her entire life in Salem, the last 3. Salemtowne. Sue was an avid reader beginning with the Nancy Drew mysteries as a child. She never lost her love of a good mystery although she read popular fiction, literature, history and plays with equal enjoyment. Sue loved the theater, especially the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, which she attended annually until her health declined. Sue`s other great love was travel. She visited 6 continents and viewed the 7th, Antarctica, from a cruise ship. Sue`s favorite travels included two around the world cruises and a cruise that circumnavigated the African continent. Among her treasured experiences were photo safaris in Kenya and South Africa, a train journey on the Palace on Wheels across India, and month long visits to Australia and New Zealand and to Great Britain. Sue loved cats and she never saw a cat she didn`t try to make friends with. Remembrances may be sent to the Willamette Humane Society. Her family moved to Portland, OR where she graduated from Madison High School in 1. Portland School of Beauty. She enjoyed spending the rest of her life cutting and styling the hair of others as well as her own and had different `look` every time you saw her.
She married John `Jack` Pugh Jr. She spent many years involved with the Oregon Dairy Wives organization and chaperoned princesses on their assignments. She could be seen every year in the Red Barn at the state fair making mile- high ice cream cones for fairgoers. Diane`s other hobbies included directing the church choir, gardening, golfing, reading and spending time with her grandkids and family. Diane leaves behind her devoted husband, Jack and their two sons, John W. Pugh III (Kathryn) and Casey A Pugh (Amy), three beloved grandchildren Gianna, Jacoby and Harrison Pugh. She also leaves two sisters, Denise Murray (Alan) and Debbie Jensen (Jim) and many extended family and friends. Since retirement he enjoyed traveling to new places, playing guitar, drawing and pursuing his love of geology and volcanoes. Interment was at City View Cemetery in Salem, Oregon. She was a very strong woman and even with all the medical issues she had through the years she put up a good fight. She most enjoyed camping, casino, coast, long drives, amusement rides, bike rides in her trailer, walks in the neighborhood, going out to dinner and many other adventures. Probably her favorite things: playing with her shoelaces, backrubs, hugs and 1: 1 time with those that she loved.
